The passengers on a Coaster bus departed Afara, an Etche community of the state, on their way to a traditional marriage in neighbouring Imo State.

But less than 30 minutes after the bus took off, it collided with a truck, killing over 13 of the travellers.

The incident was described as the worst road tragedy in the state in recent times.

A source from the area said the bus and the truck had a head-on collision.

He said the groom’s younger brother and his wife were among the dead.

Eleven persons died on the spot, while others died on their way to hospital.

A local government source said the council chairman Obinna Anyanwu had visited the scene of the incident and assisted in conveying the victims to the mortuary and hospital.

Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident but said five bodies were recovered from the scene.
