He appears in countless images, and now the media have traced his name: Jake Angeli. Who is he and what drove him to storm the Capitol?
Halfway between the Village People and William Wallace, Jake Angeli was the horned leader who preceded numerous Trump supporters into the Capitol building. He is known as the ‘Q-Shaman,’ which is short for ‘the QAnon Shaman.’ In recent years, Angeli became a renowned advocate of the outgoing president and of extreme right-wing QAnon conspiracy theories.
QAnon theories claim, among other things, that the Trump Administration has been infiltrators by enemies of the country who steal top-secret documents. These infiltrators, whom QAnon suspects to be powerful Democrats, also supposedly practice cannibalism and satanism.
Politicians like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or George Soros, and celebrities like Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey – or even Pope Francis – would be involved in these hostile practices, QAnon claims.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Jake Angeli is an aspiring actor who shifted to political activism while continuing the practice of disguising himself. His furs, body paint, horns and other paraphernalia are so much linked to his personality that people also know him as the ‘Yellowstone Wolf.’
Jake Angeli’s prominence and visibility increased in far-right circles until he earned the nickname ‘Q-Shaman’. His powerful physique and striking outfits have made him the face of the far right’s infamous assault on the Capitol.
With plain words and remarkable charisma, he has come to compare himself to Jesus or Gandhi to justify civil disobedience in the face of what he and his fellow Trumpers consider an unfair presidential victory by Joe Biden.
From Donald Trump’s rally in his home town of Phoenix to the protests against the election results in Maricopa County, Arizona, Jake Angeli has always stood out as one of the president’s loudest and most vocal supporters,
On the one hand, we could say that QAnon and their shaman have put themselves on the map internationally, which is a step forward for them. On the other, we can probably expect the horned, shirtless bison man of the Capitol riot to get a fine or prison sentence for trespassing or disturbing congressional proceedings. He will not have an alibi.
